Joseph Grimaldi was a London clown in the 1880s complete with a painted face and wild clothes. His act was more geared toward adults, offering crude jokes and laughs. Grimaldi's private life though was filled with much sadness and tragedy.
Over in France during the same time period, Jean-Gaspard Deburau created Pierrot the clown. He became the first so-called killer clown when he beat a child to death with his clown cane after the little boy taunted him.
