Dr. Seuss, also known as Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born on March 2, 1904. His birthday has been adopted as National Read Across America Day.
In all, Seuss wrote more than 60 books. His books have sold more than 600 million copies. They have been translated into more than 20 languages. His works have inspired animated television shows and movies.

The date of the nationwide Read Across America school initiative designed to instill a joy of reading into children was chosen to occur annually on Seuss' birthday. The first Read Across America Day was celebrated on March 2, 1998. Seuss's birthday was picked for the event because he is considered one of the most beloved children's authors.
